There are so many misconceptions about what it's like to work with a sleep coach. There's a whole cohort of moms out there who think it's simply about leaving your baby to cry it out - or even that it's just about (gasp) sleep training. This simply isn't so and in reality, couldn't be further from the truth.
Working with a sleep coach (a quality one, anyway), is about deep diving into the many things that impact sleep and pinpointing exactly why your child is struggling with sleep. If there's is something getting in the way of your child's sleep success, sleep training isn't going to work. When we first start working together, we'll dive into things such as:
the amount of sleep that your child is getting both during the day an at night
how feeding habits and patterns may affect sleep
other impacting factors such as reflux, colic and separation anxiety
your child's sleep environment
your baby's different cues and cries
your child's sensory regulation and needs
your child's social/emotional needs
Once we have the whole picture, and set goals for your child, I write a plan for you specifically designed to meet your child's needs and goals.
There's another big thing that happens when you work with a sleep consultant: you have access to an expert who coaches and guides you every step of the way. Helping your child sleep well isn't simple. Every child is different, and what works for one may not work for all. A sleep consultant can look at the big picture and determine what tweaks need to be made once you've started your plan so that your child has sleep success. Sleep consultants also provide moral support and parenting coaching, which is often critical to success. Working on your child's sleep can be hard, even more so if the people in your circle don't understand what you're going through. When you work with a sleep consultant, you are likely to finally feel like you have a village.
So to recap, here's what happens when you work with a sleep consultant:
You finally get the answers you're looking for and figure out why your child isn't sleeping
You are given a sleep plan written specifically for your child and designed to meet his or her sleep goals
You have someone to guide you through any situation you encounter with sleep and gain the confidence to know what to do once you're done working together
You have a village and a support system to help you navigate this tricky and sometimes defeating part of parenting
You totally transform your child's sleep! You begin to enjoy bedtime instead of dreading it. You notice that your child is happier and is better able to regulate his or her mood and emotions (and so are you). You have time to relax, get things done, or hang with your partner after your kids have gone to bed. You realize that you're through this incredibly difficult chapter of bedtime battles and sleepless nights and you start to feel like your self again. Your only regret will be that you didn't start working with a sleep consultant sooner.
