Thinking it may be time to sleep train your baby or toddler, but aren't sure if you or your child are ready? You're not alone. This is a big change! The most important thing that I always tell families is that you'll know when the time is right. If what you're doing is working and feels right to you, there's no need to change anything.
At some point however, things may start to feel a little off, or like they're not working for you or for your child anymore. Here are some common signs that it may be time for you to sleep train your child:
You've been rocking or feeding your child to sleep, but he can't seem to get comfortable falling asleep in your arms anymore
You're starting to feel resentful about all of the night wakings and you know that something needs to change
You've been co-sleeping and your child seems to wake every time you move or make a sound.
If you're reading this and thinking that some of this resonates with you, it may be time to explore some sleep training options. While it can feel daunting, I promise you that when done appropriately, most families only regret that they didn't decide to do it sooner.
Sleep training looks a lot different than it used to. It's not all about crying it out! We now know that helping your baby sleep well involves a variety of things ranging from their level of tired to their feeding habits to consistency and their level of need for connection at bedtime. Check out my blog post on what you do when you work with a sleep coach to learn more about how each of these things impacts sleep.
Additionally, there are many methods of sleep training now, and with some methods, you can be right by your child's crib or bed until he gains the comfort and confidence needed for you to tuck him in, say goodnight and leave the room.
If you feel like it's time to sleep train, but you aren't sure where to begin or you know you'll need guidance, support, accountability and encouragement to make it through, this is exactly what I'm here for.
